SSS Sickness Benefit Calculator

The SSS sickness benefit is 90% of your average daily salary credit for every day of confinement beyond three days, up to 120 days a year (RA 11199, Sec. 14). The daily credit is your 6 highest monthly salary credits from the 12 months before the semester of sickness ÷ 180, each MSC counted up to ₱20,000.00. Example: a ₱20,000 salary gives ₱600.00 a day, or ₱6,000.00 for 10 days. Employees are paid by the employer every payday after paid sick leave runs out; SSS reimburses the employer.

Conditions in RA 11199, Section 14

  • Contributions: at least 3 posted monthly contributions in the 12 months before the semester of sickness or injury.
  • Confinement: more than 3 days at home or in a hospital, approved by SSS; the benefit begins on the first day of sickness.
  • Notice: tell your employer within 5 calendar days of the start of confinement — or SSS directly if you are self-employed, voluntary or unemployed. Hospital confinement, or sickness at work, needs no notice. Late notice moves the start of the compensable period.
  • Limits: 120 days per calendar year; 240 days for the same confinement; unused days are not carried forward.
  • Sick leave first: the allowance starts only after paid sick leave with the employer is exhausted (Sec. 14(b)).
  • Reimbursement: SSS repays the employer 100% if the employer notified SSS within 5 days of the employee's notice; claims must be filed within one year of the confinement.

How to File

  1. Notify your employer (or SSS through My.SSS) within 5 days, with the medical certificate or hospital records.
  2. Employed members: the employer files the Sickness Notification and the reimbursement claim through the employer's My.SSS account and pays you every payday.
  3. Self-employed, voluntary and separated members: file the Sickness Benefit Application in My.SSS; payment goes to your enrolled disbursement account.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the SSS sickness benefit computed?

Add your 6 highest monthly salary credits in the 12 months before the semester of sickness, divide by 180 for the average daily salary credit, take 90% of it, and multiply by the compensable days (RA 11199, Sec. 14(a)). Example: MSC ₱20,000.00 → ₱666.67 a day → ₱600.00 daily allowance → ₱6,000.00 for 10 days. Each MSC counts only up to ₱20,000.00.

Who qualifies for the SSS sickness benefit?

A member with at least 3 posted monthly contributions in the 12 months before the semester of sickness, confined at home or in a hospital for more than 3 days with SSS approval, who has used up all paid sick leave with the employer, and who notified the employer within 5 calendar days of the start of confinement (or SSS directly, if self-employed, voluntary or unemployed). Hospital confinement needs no notification.

How many days of sickness benefit can I get?

Up to 120 days per calendar year, and no more than 240 days for the same illness or injury; unused days do not carry over to the next year (Sec. 14(a)(1)–(2)). The maximum benefit for a full 120 days at the ₱20,000.00 cap is ₱72,000.00.

Who pays the sickness benefit, the employer or SSS?

For employed members the employer advances the allowance every regular payday and SSS reimburses 100% of it, provided the employer notified SSS within 5 days of the employee's notice (Sec. 14(b)–(c)). Self-employed, voluntary and separated members are paid directly by SSS to their enrolled disbursement account.

Is the sickness benefit the same as paid sick leave?

No. Company or CBA sick leave with full pay must be exhausted first; the SSS benefit starts only after that (Sec. 14(b)). The Labor Code itself grants no paid sick leave — only the five days of service incentive leave — so many workers go straight to the SSS benefit.
